Centre of Excellence for Physical Activity at Sunnyfields Primary School

Autumn Term 2024/2025, we were awarded a Centre of Excellence for our Physical Educational Lessons by Yorkshire Sport Foundation.

Sunnyfields Primary School is a school which is part of a Creating Active Schools program (CAS). CAS is a professional development program which supports schools to create happy and healthy environments through physical activity. Using behavioural science, CAS helps schools to create impactful and sustainable change for physical activity. Underpinned by research CAS supports schools to build on their strengths while identifying areas of improvement that can be improved step-by-step.

PE, After School Clubs & Children's University

In March 2013, the government announced that it was to provide additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools in England - The Primary PE & Sport Premium. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - is allocated to primary school head teachers. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Purpose of funding:

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. For example, they can use their funding to:

• Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
• Provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
• Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
• Support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
• Run sport competitions
• Increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
• Run sports activities with other schools.

Vision:

All pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

Objective:

To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools.

We would expect indicators of such improvement to include:

• The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
• The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
• Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
• Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
• Increased participation in competitive sport.

Accountability:

From September 2013, schools will be held to account over how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding. Ofsted will strengthen the coverage of PE and sport within the 'Inspectors’ handbook' and supporting guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision.

Schools will also be required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.

Children's University

Children’s University work alongside Sunnyfields in celebrating children’s extra curricular activities. Almost all of the learning, activities and clubs that children take part in outside of school hours can be logged through the Children’s University portal. When a child reaches a certain number of hours, they will get a certificate or award to celebrate their achievement. Each year, there is a graduation for the children that have participated (with proper hats and gowns)! This is such an exciting thing to be part of. If you would like your child to be part of it, please contact your child’s class teacher or the office about signing up.

After School Clubs
