Community Champion

Community Champion

Welcome to the Community Champion page, my name is Sarah Wortley and I am Sunnyfields Community Champion!

What is a Community Champion?

My role is to support the education, health and wellbeing of our pupils in school and to organise events and raise awareness and support of the school within the community.

My aim is also to improve the quality of curriculum and non-curriculum provision by applying for funding.

My work so far

Since starting my role in May 2022 I have achieved some amazing things with the help of our children, families and the community.

Here are some of the projects we have worked on together:

Donations to Food Banks

In November 2022, Bentley Baptist Community Food Bank came in to school to do an assembly to speak to the children about the current need for Food Banks, how they run it, what items they require. With help from the children, we organised a collection which was delivered just before Christmas. For more information about Bentley Baptist Community Food Bank please click the link below:

In 2023 and 2024 we organised Harvest Festival collections and donated them to the Doncaster Food Bank. For more information about Doncaster Food Bank please click on the link below:

St Peters Uniform Bank

In December 2022 St Peters Uniform Bank asked us if we could reach out to our families and ask for any donations of unused uniforms. Sunnyfields did not disappoint and we were able to make a large donation to St Peter's so that they could distribute it to families that needed it. This was not our last donation, we have continued to support St Peters School Wardrobe (formally St Peters Uniform Bank) over the last two years. Bags2School

Bag2School is a free eco-friendly fundraising scheme that helps schools, businesses, community groups, local councils, and charities raise funds through textile recycling as well as spreading textile recycling awareness. I have organised three collections since 2022 and we raised just under £245!

Woodland Trust

Since I started, we have planted 105 mixed tree saplings, a willow tunnel and a willow circle. I have worked with our Gardening & Eco Club to complete activities which earned us our Green Tree Gold award.

Yorkshire Sport Foundation

We received £30,000 of funding from the Yorkshire Sport Foundation to help us develop our already amazing woodland area and train our staff to enable us to run a parent and child Forest After School club. The club was designed to build relationships, learn new skills and for the children to explore the woodland area.

I have also introduced some fundraising opportunities like the Sunnyfields School Lottery, and Easyfundraising. Why not head over to our Fundraising page for more details:
